Wildfires are threatening more than 200 villages in the Russian regions of Voronezh, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Mordovia.Nearly 240,000 people are battling the wildfires.According to the Emergencies Ministry more than 125,000 hectares of forest are burning. There are also 18 peat bog fires, 9 of which are in the Central Federal District. Pictured: wildfire fully destroyed Peredeltsi village in Ryazan region of Russia. July 22, 2010. 35th anniversary of Apollo-Soyuz Test Project was celebrated in Moscow. Pictured: l-r cosmonauts Valery Kubasov and Alexei Leonov and U.S. astronauts Thomas Stafford and Vance Brand at the press conference in Moscow. On July 15, 1975, the Soyuz-19 spacecraft with cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valery Kubasov onboard lifted off from the Baikonur Space Center in the Soviet Union at 3.20 p.m. Moscow time. Seven-and-a-half hours later, the Apollo-18 spacecraft with U.S. Astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand and Donald “Deke” Slayton onboard lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Soviet and U.S. crews visited each other’s spacecraft and conducted scientific experiments during their joint flight.

July 21, 2010. Pictured: Baksanskaya power plant. Two people died in two blasts that hit a Baksanskaya hydro-electric power plant in Baksan town of Kabadino-Balkaria in Caucasis, in an unclaimed terrorist attack, Russian news agencies reported. Another two people were wounded, state-run power group RusHydro said. `An explosion took place on the premises of the Baksanskaya hydroelectric power plant` early today, the company said in a statement. `Two guards died, two people were hospitalised.` As a result, the power plant`s engine room was on fire, it said. The power plant is located on the Baksan river in Kabardino-Balkaria.

June 15, 2010. Kyrgyz ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiyev gave a press conference in Minsk on June 14, 2010. The interim government of Kyrgyzstan has accused former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev of provoking the violence in order to destabilize the country ahead of a planned constitutional referendum later this month,but Bakiyev issued a statement saying he had played no role in the violence.Bakiyev also called for a Russia-dominated regional security bloc, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), to send forces to quell unrest in Kyrgyzstan.
