In response to British decision to send 75 years old pop singer Engelbert Humperdinck to the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest to represent the UK, Russia will send Buranovskie Babushki band to represent Russia at Eurovision 2012 song contest. The band Buranovskiye Babushki consists of eight grandmothers. Buranovskie Babushki is a band from Buranovo village in Udmurtia, Russia who sing in Udmurtian language, making cover versions of famous Russian and western songs. The collective started to perform in 2008. They would sing the songs of Victor Tsoi, the cult Russian rock star from the 80s and some Beatles hits. It’s sort of amazing to see these joyful old people wearing their traditional outfits in a very pop-music context. When one thinks how depressing life in a Russian village can be, Buranovskie Babushki show us a slight ray of hope or maybe the last glimpse of it.
