Spasskaya Tower icon reinstallation starts | ||||||||||||||||||||
A layer of plaster has been removed from the icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker over the gates of Moscow Kremlin’s Nikolskaya Tower (not pictured). Before being walled up after the 1917 Revolution, the icon was riddled with bullets by the Bolsheviks, but the face of St. Nicholas remained unharmed. This was not for the first time that an ancient icon was discovered in the Moscow Kremlin. Another one, depicting Jesus Christ (pictured), was found over the gates of the Spasskaya Tower a week ago.
