May 11, 2007. Netherlands, Nijmegen. International Week at tango school `El Corte`.(On the photo) The milonga has just started and there are only few couples on the dancing floor. All the other tangeros are resting after workshops, getting ready for the evening. The experienced DJ (the so-called “TJ”- tango dj) creates the atmosphere and mood of the milonga by the change of different jenres of Argentinean tango, usually played in tandas (sets of tracks in the same style or of the same orchestra): tango itself alternates with milonga (quicker playful tango) and tango-valse; traditional music is then changed by tango nuevo, neo or electrotango. The light plays an important role as well – brightness, red color tints – are in the possession thanks to the specially-designed lighting equipment. ` The argentine tango school “El Corte” will celebrate its 20th anniversary in February 2008. The idea behind El Corte is that the best way of learning tango is to dance it. Therefore el corte organized – next to a lot of teaching – salons, practice nights, workshops, concerts, films and lectures. Salons (milongas) can go on 3 hours or longer (the New Year Maraphon goes on non-stop for 28 hours and some more as a brunch salon), some of the monthly milongas have free entrance. The amount of the so-called “friends-of-el-corte” exceed 1000 people from over the world, about 400 of them are regulars coming several times a year to this unique tango house. But as the number of participants is always limited (100-250) there is easy to get to many events. On some occasions 25-40 people are allowed to stay overnight with a sleeping bag for modest money which makes the atmosphere of the salon even more special. The organizers avoid advertisement and extra publicity as there are already too many eager to spend their best time there. To fit in the space you need to share something special which unites all “el cortians”. 20040705
